Here’s why ice was a hot commodity in the Nushagak this summer
Many Bristol Bay salmon processors give bonuses to fishermen who can chill the fish sitting in their boat’s hold. That’s not so easy, though, when ice is in short supply.
KDLG by Austin Fast – July 21, 2018
Bristol Bay’s Nushagak fishing district pulled in more than a million sockeye on eight separate days earlier this month. Before this summer, it had only done that twice in Bristol Bay’s history.

Ocean Cleanup Movement 4Ocean to Pull 1 Millionth Pound of Trash From the Water
SEAFOODNEWS.COM – July 19, 2018
Ocean cleanup movement 4Ocean is set to pull their one millionth pound of trash on Friday, July 20 … less than two years after the organization formed.

4Ocean was launched by Andrew Cooper and Alex Schulze, two surfers who decided to do something about the amount of plastic in the ocean after taking a surf trip to Bali Indonesia. Now, after founding the company in January 2017, 4Ocean is set to hit their one million pound of trash milestone.

“This milestone shows us how much commitment there is from our customers, how much support there is from the communities and how much opportunity there is for us to make a difference in the future of the ocean,” said Cooper.

4Ocean is able to remove trash from the ocean and coastlines by selling bracelets made from recycled materials. Every bracelet that is purchased funds the removal of one pound of trash.

“We’re creating new, more sustainable companies around the world by paying fishermen to collect plastic and trash from the ocean instead of fish,” Schulze explained. “It’s changing the way people think about the problem of plastic pollution.”

A reported eight million tonnes of plastic goes into the ocean every year. Some states in the U.S. are passing bills that aim to reduce plastic litter in the future.
