Early Numbers Show Copper River Escapement is Higher and Harvests are Lower Than Predicted

In the first week of the eight-week Copper River red run, a total of 56,000 sockeye, 4200 chinook, and 1,700 chum were landed by Cordova’s gillnet fleet.  Last Monday’s 24-hour opener netted 40,000 sockeye instead of the expected 92,000 fish.

The season continues this morning with a 24-hour opener starting at 7 a.m.

Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game also opened three districts in Prince William Sound to drift gillnets, all but one to start on Monday, May 25. The Eshamy District will open Thursday, May 28 at 8 a.m. for a 60-hour opener. The fleet will target Main Bay Hatchery’s 1.55 million sockeye salmon during the months of June and July this season.

Prince William Sound’s Coghill District opens Monday, May 25 for a 48-hour period beginning at 8 a.m. Fishermen are after half a million chum salmon released from the the Wally Nuremberg hatchery. Fishing is expected to continue through July.

The Montague District opens Monday, May 25 for 60 hours beginning at 8 a.m. with an additional three-and-a-half-days beginning Thursday, May 28 at 8 a.m. Gillnetters are targeting chum salmon there.

The Southwestern District will be open to seiners for the early chum run at 8 a.m. Monday, May 25 and continue for 60 hours, closing Wednesday morning. The second period will begin 8 a.m. Thursday, May 28, when the area will be open for 84 hours to 8 p.m. on Saturday. The fishery will continue opening for two fishing periods per week until further notice.

Meanwhile, the Copper River sonar counter, upstream from the delta fishing areas, are recording far higher escapement than expected. On Monday, 20,000 sockeye were counted passing the counter, when the expectation was for 2,024. The next day, 35,207 sockeye ran past the sonar, ten times the anticipated 3,600 fish.

The Copper River is expected to bring in 2.2 million sockeye, 214,000 coho, and 6,000 Chinook salmon this year.  The 2015 in-river goal past the Miles Lake sonar is 759,000 – 1.15 million salmon.

The next scheduled announcement from ADF&G will be on Saturday, May 23, at 2 p.m.

The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission says that preliminary statistics on North Pacific wide total salmon catches for 2014 reported by its member countries – Canada, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States – totaled some 394 million fish, or 0.86 million metric tons.

Slow Start on Copper River Fishery Brings High Prices to Harvesters

Alaska’s celebrated Copper River salmon fishery is off and running, with first run kings and sockeyes paying record prices of $8 and $5.25 a pound respectively to harvesters. And in the marketplace seafood aficionados were lining up in Anchorage to pay $31.95 a pound for Chinook fillets and $24.99 a pound for fillets of red salmon.||

GFTC receives USD 1.3m grant to improve seafood traceability

As part of its ongoing efforts aimed at improving traceability in the worldwide food system, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Global Food Traceability Center (GFTC) announced that it has received a USD 1.3 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The new grant will support efforts to design a common technology architecture for seafood traceability and related communications, education, and training efforts.

Chinook Salmon Ear Bones Show Life Story
