Opinion Opinion: Alaska’s hatcheries help feed Alaskans and the world Anchorage Daily News by Steve Reifenstuhl, Casey Campbell, Mike Wells, Tina Fairbanks, Eric Prestegard, Dean Day, David Landis, Bart Watson - August 27, 2019
In late March of this year, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game issued its forecast for the 2019 statewide salmon harvest as 213.2 million fish. This was good news for practically everyone interested in the Alaska salmon fishery, as the forecast represents an 84% increase, some 97.5 million fish more than 2018’s landings of about 116 million salmon. According to Fish and Game Fisheries Scientist Andrew Munro, “most of that increase is expected in pink and chum harvests.” Pink and chum salmon are responsible for 73% and 20%, respectively, of total enhancement production by Alaska’s private nonprofit salmon hatcheries. https://www.adn.com/opinions/2019/08/28/alaskas-hatcheries-help-feed-alaskans-and-the-world/
