NOAA Fisheries - April 4, 2022 In late 2019, the National Science Foundation proposed to fund a high-energy seismic research survey in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. It would take place off the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver Island in the summer of 2021. These surveys inform earthquake and tsunami hazards in the highly populated Pacific Northwest. The surveys deploy airguns, which create sound waves that transmit through the water. Any marine life in the area could be affected by the sound, including salmon and Southern resident killer whales, which are culturally important to many Pacific Northwest Tribes. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/working-west-coast-tribes-protect-endangered-species Indigenous peoples of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia calling for protection of wild salmon KINY - April 5, 2022 Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Southeast Indigenous Transboundary Commission has issued a statement following a summit calling for the survival of wild salmon. https://www.kinyradio.com/news/news-of-the-north/indigenous-peoples-of-southeast-alaska-and-british-columbia-calling-for-protection-of-wild-salmon/ Federal Register Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska; Pacific Cod by Catcher Vessels Using Trawl Gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 04/06/2022 NMFS is prohibiting directed fishing for Pacific cod by catcher vessels using trawl gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI).
