Alaska/Pacific Coast

Lake Iliamna and Lower Bristol Bay ACs mixed on dipnetting and permit stacking proposals The Alaska Board of Fisheries will vote on 47 proposals at the Bristol Bay Finfish meeting this week. Advisory committee reports will be a major factor. At their meetings, the Lake Iliamna and Lower Bristol Bay ACs weighed in on the contentious and recurring issue of permit stacking. KDLG by Isabelle Ross - November 27, 2018 The Lake Iliamna Advisory Committee opposed proposals that would allow one person to operate two commercial fishing permits at the same time. Chair Randolph Alvarez worries permit stacking would hurt local fishermen who have a permit but no boat. Current regulation allows a boat with two permit holders on board to fish with an extra 50 fathoms of net. Alvarez says that regulation’s original intent was to allow a person who had a permit but no boat to get on board another vessel. According to Alvarez, the permit stacking proposals would undermine that intent. https://www.kdlg.org/post/lake-iliamna-and-lower-bristol-bay-acs-mixed-dipnetting-and-permit-stacking-proposals#stream/0 Fishermen’s Finest waiver lands on Trump’s desk National Fisherman by Jessica Hathaway - November 27, 2018 The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act on Tuesday, Nov. 27, sending the bill to President Trump for a signature. https://www.nationalfisherman.com/national-international/fishermens-finest-waiver-lands-on-trumps-desk/ International Russia Expects Record Fish Harvests This Year; Salmon Growth Almost Doubles SeafoodNews.com by Eugene Gerden - November 26, 2018 Russia expects a record fish catch this year since the beginning of 1980s, according to recent statements of an official spokesman of the Federal Agency of Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo). According to deputy head of Rosrybolovstvo, Vasily Sokolov, the volume of catch this year will be more than 5 million tons – a record in the post-Soviet period and in the history of modern Russia. According to data of Rosrybolovstvo, more than 677,000 tonnes of salmon were caught in the Far East this year, which is almost 326,000 tonnes higher than last year. This is an absolute record for salmon fishing in the Russian Far East for the last 100 years. Overall, total catch in the Far East basin this year amounted to 3.2 million tonnes. Of this, pollock accounted for 1.56 million tonnes. At the same time, the cod catch grew to 110,600 tonnes. The volume of catch in the Northern Basin this year amounted to 553,000 tonnes. It summarizes the impacts of climate change in the United States as well as potential mitigation and adaptation measures. The report states that the combined effect of burning fossil fuels, developing natural landscapes, and deforestation have increased the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in Earth's atmosphere* and emphasizes that drastically reducing GHGs is necessary to prevent the most catastrophic consequences of climate change. https://www.forbes.com/sites/priyashukla/2018/11/26/to-protect-oceans-from-catastrophic-climate-change-we-must-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions/#62e6d89b7f6b Federal Register Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska; Exchange of Flatfish in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 11/27/2018 NMFS is exchanging unused rock sole Community Development Quota (CDQ) for yellowfin sole CDQ acceptable biological catch (ABC) reserves in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area.
