Alaska/Pacific Coast Board of Fisheries rejects hatchery proposals KDLL by Shaylon Cochran - December 17, 2019 The state Board of Fisheries wrapped up three days of meetings focused on Lower Cook Inlet issues on Friday. Hatchery operations were one of the more debated topics, with a number of proposals before the board aimed at limiting hatchery operations. https://www.kdll.org/post/board-fisheries-rejects-hatchery-proposals#stream/0 What’s the dollar value of wild salmon produced by the Tongass and the Chugach? Cordova Times by Mary Catharine Martin - December 20, 2019 Clean air. Clean water. Deer. Moose. Blueberries. Salmon. Alaska’s Tongass and Chugach National Forests provide many different things to the people who rely on them for food, recreation or a living, but because the forests work for free, the value of the services they provide is sometimes hard to recognize. As part of a growing movement to figure out the dollar value of those forest “products,” however, scientists for the first time have estimated the value of the Tongass and the Chugach National Forests to Alaska’s commercial salmon industry. https://www.thecordovatimes.com/2019/12/20/whats-the-dollar-value-of-wild-salmon-produced-by-the-tongass-and-the-chugach/ Bids sought on Pollock test fishery Cordova Times - December 20, 2019 Bids are due by Jan. 8 for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Prince William Sound area Pollock test fishery. The winning bidder will be using pelagic trawl gear to harvest up to 900,000 pounds (408 metric tons) of walleye Pollock. Eligible vessels must register for the 2020 Prince William Sound directed Pollock pelagic trawl fishery. https://www.thecordovatimes.com/2019/12/20/bids-sought-on-pollock-test-fishery/ Environment/Science NOAA chief science advisor to address AMSS Second day of symposium focuses on the Gulf of Alaska Cordova Times by Margaret Bauman - December 20, 2019 Keynote presenters for the 2020 Alaska Marine Science Symposium, set for Jan. 27-31 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, will include Francisco Werner, a top scientist with NOAA Fisheries, and Maija Katak Lukin, superintendent of Western Arctic Parklands. https://www.thecordovatimes.com/2019/12/20/noaa-chief-science-advisor-to-address-amss/ Federal Register Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska; Pacific Cod in the Gulf of Alaska A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 12/23/2019 NMFS is prohibiting directed fishing for Pacific cod in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA). This action is necessary because a biological assessment of stock condition for Pacific cod in the GOA projects that the spawning biomass will be below 20 percent of the projected unfished spawning biomass during 2020. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/12/23/2019-27567/fisheries-of-the-exclusive-economic-zone-off-alaska-pacific-cod-in-the-gulf-of-alaska Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska; Inseason Adjustment to the 2020 Gulf of Alaska Pollock and Pacific Cod Total Allowable Catch Amounts A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 12/23/2019 NMFS is adjusting the 2020 total allowable catch (TAC) amounts for the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) pollock and Pacific cod fishery. This action is necessary because NMFS has determined these TACs are incorrectly specified, and will ensure the GOA pollock and Pacific cod TACs are the appropriate amount based on the best available scientific information for pollock and Pacific cod in the GOA. This action is consistent with the goals and objectives of the Fishery Management Plan for Groundfish of the Gulf of Alaska. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/12/23/2019-27539/fisheries-of-the-exclusive-economic-zone-off-alaska-inseason-adjustment-to-the-2020-gulf-of-alaska
