Russia Puts Big Hopes on its White Fish Exports in Years to Come

The Russian government plans to attract up to RUB 340 billion (US$5,48 billion) of private investments in the implementation of "New Cod Industry" – a state project, which involves the conduction of a large-scale modernization of the existing capacities in Russia for the production of cod fish, according to recent statements, made by senior officials of Russian Rosrybolovstvo and industry’s analysts.
In general, the project involves building up to 43 new fishing trawlers and 26 coastal fish production enterprises within the territory of the country by 2025.
According to some senior officials of the Russian Rosrybolovstvo as well as some independent analysts in the field of fishing, Russia plans to use the US experience of the development of cod sector. The latter means a shift from a simple catch of cod fish species to their deep processing on the commercial basis. According to state plans, this will allow to double revenue, generated by the industry already during within the next 1-2 years.
It is planned, successful implementation of these plans will also allow Russia to expand the geography of supplies of its white fish, which, so far, have been primarily limited by the Asia Pacific region by the beginning of its massive supplies to the markets of Latin America and the EU.
Already in the middle term, Russia plans to become one of the largest suppliers of white fish and products from it to some of the largest markets in the EU, such as German.
In addition to Germany, particular hopes are placed on the markets of -France and Poland, where in recent years the demand for pollock fillets has significantly increased and which remain by 100% dependent from the import of these fish products from abroad.
At the same time in the case of the UK a particular attention will be paid for the increase of exports of atlantic cod and haddock, as well as fish products, made from it.

NMFS is prohibiting directed fishing for Pacific cod by catcher vessels less than 60 feet (18.3 meters (m)) length overall (LOA) using hook-and-line or pot gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI). This action is necessary to prevent exceeding the 2020 Pacific cod total allowable catch allocated to catcher vessels less than 60 feet (18.3 m) LOA using hook-and-line or pot gear in the BSAI.
