Yukon River Fishing Closure Extends Along Coast KYUK by Johanna Eurich - June 24, 2020 Managers are imposing more measures to try to conserve Yukon River king salmon. Until now, restrictions on fishing have been limited to the Yukon River system. But this week, opportunities for subsistence fishing along the coast near the river are also being reduced because king salmon have not appeared in expected numbers. The news comes after the show, which was initially scheduled to take place in March, was postponed to September because of the coronavirus outbreak. “It is with great disappointment that we have to bring you the news that we will not be able to meet in person in 2020,” Liz Plizga, Diversified Group Vice President, said in an email to registered exhibitors. Plizga said that the reason for cancelling the event stems from “too many uncertainties about the impact that COVID-19 will have on travel and mass gatherings in September.” “It is impossible to hold an event that would provide an experience our seafood community would find valuable,” added Plizga. As mentioned above, Seafood Expo North America, also referred to as the Boston Seafood Show, was originally supposed to take place in March. However, with cases of COVID-19 beginning to spread in the U.S., and travel restrictions put in place, exhibitors began to pull out of the show. In early March some exhibitors even put together a petition to call for Diversified to cancel the event or issue a refund to those who decided not to attend due to health concerns. Diversified ultimately ended up postponing the show on March 3, and rescheduling it for September. Seafood Expo North America is not the only event that Diversified was forced to cancel due to the coronavirus. The show runners also canceled Seafood Expo Global. The 2020 event was set to be the show’s final year in Brussels before moving to Barcelona in 2021. Seafood Expo North America 2021 is scheduled to take place from March 14-16 in Boston, Massachusetts.
