Yukon River Fishing Closure Extends Along Coast KYUK by Johanna Eurich - June 24, 2020 Managers are imposing more measures to try to conserve Yukon River king salmon. Until now, restrictions on fishing have been limited to the Yukon River system. But this week, opportunities for subsistence fishing along the coast near the river are also being reduced because king salmon have not appeared in expected numbers. Instead of being open every day all week, fishing in the South Coastal District is being cut in half, to three-and-a-half days a week. https://www.kyuk.org/post/yukon-river-fishing-closure-extends-along-coast Togiak herring harvesters complete season Cordova Times - June 24, 2020 Two seiner and one gillnet fishing crews were the sole harvesters in the 2020 Togiak herring fishery that concluded on May 16, with deliveries to Icicle Seafoods’ floating processor, according to a season summary issued Monday, June 15, by state fisheries officials. https://www.thecordovatimes.com/2020/06/24/togiak-herring-harvesters-complete-season/ Twelve new cases of COVID-19 at OBI seafood plant in Dillingham mark largest single-day case count OBI Seafoods confirmed today that the 12 positive cases of COVID-19 in Dillingham are workers at its Wood River seafood processing plant. The news comes after the show, which was initially scheduled to take place in March, was postponed to September because of the coronavirus outbreak. “It is with great disappointment that we have to bring you the news that we will not be able to meet in person in 2020,” Liz Plizga, Diversified Group Vice President, said in an email to registered exhibitors. Plizga said that the reason for cancelling the event stems from “too many uncertainties about the impact that COVID-19 will have on travel and mass gatherings in September.” “It is impossible to hold an event that would provide an experience our seafood community would find valuable,” added Plizga. As mentioned above, Seafood Expo North America, also referred to as the Boston Seafood Show, was originally supposed to take place in March. However, with cases of COVID-19 beginning to spread in the U.S., and travel restrictions put in place, exhibitors began to pull out of the show. In early March some exhibitors even put together a petition to call for Diversified to cancel the event or issue a refund to those who decided not to attend due to health concerns. Diversified ultimately ended up postponing the show on March 3, and rescheduling it for September. Seafood Expo North America is not the only event that Diversified was forced to cancel due to the coronavirus. The show runners also canceled Seafood Expo Global. The 2020 event was set to be the show’s final year in Brussels before moving to Barcelona in 2021. Seafood Expo North America 2021 is scheduled to take place from March 14-16 in Boston, Massachusetts. Seafood Expo Global 2021 is scheduled for April 27-29. https://www.seafoodnews.com/Story/1174530/Seafood-Expo-North-America-2020-Officially-Canceled-After-Getting-Postponed-Due-to-Coronavirus National Seafood2030 to investigate the issues shaping seafood’s sustainable future SeafoodSource by Ned Daly - June 23, 2020 As a new decade dawns, seafood seems poised to have its moment. This final rule reduces operational and management inefficiencies in the Central Gulf of Alaska and Western Gulf of Alaska trawl catcher vessel pollock and Pacific cod fisheries by reducing regulatory time gaps between the pollock seasons, and changing Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod seasonal apportionments to allow greater harvest opportunities earlier in the year. This action is intended to promote the goals and objectives of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson-Stevens Act), the GOA FMP, and other applicable laws. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/06/25/2020-12453/fisheries-of-the-exclusive-economic-zone-off-alaska-modifying-seasonal-allocations-of-pollock-and Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska; IFQ Program; Modify Temporary Transfer Provisions A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 06/25/2020 NMFS issues an emergency rule to modify the temporary transfer provision of the Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) Program for the fixed-gear commercial Pacific halibut and sablefish fisheries for the 2020 IFQ fishing year. This emergency rule is intended to provide flexibility to quota share (QS) holders in 2020 while preserving the long-standing objective of maintaining an owner-operated IFQ fishery in future years. This emergency rule would not modify other provisions of the IFQ Program. One of the most important changes, at least in the life of this editor, was the acquisition of Fishermen’s News by me and my brother, Peter, in 2000. https://www.fishermensnews.com/story/2020/07/01/todays-catch/winds-of-change/675.html?utm_source=FN+Online+062420&utm_campaign=FNOnline+062420&utm_medium=email&fbclid=IwAR2LJTh29Vgi8d2QF7OXK7xM0WuaMKgsECNcFdBGfcUZVCRcgjuoQvub8Wc
