NOAA Fisheries - February 19, 2019 Scientists released results of a study showing that larval Pacific cod response to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels varies depending on its stage of development. In laboratory experiments, NOAA Fisheries scientists and partners specifically examined larval cod behavior, growth, and lipid composition (the fats needed for storing energy and building muscles). As excess CO2 from the atmosphere dissolves in the ocean, pH is lowered and the ocean increases in acidity, in a process called ocean acidification. Studies like this are important because most marine fish mortality occurs at the larval stage of development and the high-latitude oceans where Pacific cod and other important commercial fisheries occur are expected to be among the most vulnerable to ocean acidification. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/ocean-acidification-could-affect-pacific-cod-development Labeling and Marketing Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute: Marketing Update ASMI - February 2019 ASMI News and Updates Facebook Page, SENA Appointment Reservations, New Species Fact Sheet: Alaska Sablefish, ASMI Seafood Technical Director Presents at IntraFish Women of Seafood, ASMI Presents at Alaska-China Business Conference, ASMI Northern Europe leads fisheries panel at Arctic Encounter in London, ASMI Leads Sustainable Seafood Discussions in Japan, Alaska Seafood Chef featured in FSR Magazine https://mailchi.mp/alaskaseafood/alaska-seafood-marketing-update-asmi-leaders-speak-at-women-in-seafood-2656017 FYI’s Coast Guard coming to do vessel inspections The Cordova Times - February 20, 2019 Commercial fishing vessel examiners from the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Valdez will be in Cordova April 26 through May 1 to conduct dockside exams, to ensure vessel safety and preparedness for emergency situations. https://thecordovatimes.com/2019/02/20/coast-guard-coming-to-do-vessel-inspections/ Trident Seafoods Protein Noodles Win Symphony’s Grand Prize Fishermen's News - February 20, 2019 Protein Noodles from Trident Seafoods, made with sustainable, wild caught Alaska Pollock, have claimed top honors in the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation’s 2019 Alaska Symphony of Seafood.
