Port of Tacoma Approves Ground Lease for $250M Cold Storage Facility Expected to Create 400 Jobs

The Port of Tacoma Commission on June 16 approved a 50-year ground lease with Saxum Investment Company, LLC for a cold storage and food processing facility on a 30-acre site on the Blair-Hylebos Peninsula.
Saxum anticipates investing up to $250 million in the project, which is expected to generate up to 400 jobs and $43 million in annual wages upon completion. The facility will feature high-efficiency cold storage and purpose-built food processing space, with direct access to port facilities, rail freight service, and major road transportation corridors.
Construction is expected to begin after the Port completes remediation of legacy contamination on the site, which is anticipated by year-end. The 24-month construction timeline puts a projected completion date in late 2028.
"When we talk about supporting family wage jobs, this is exactly what we mean," said Port of Tacoma Commission President Dick Marzano.
The project adds significant cold chain infrastructure to the Pacific Northwest, a critical corridor for Alaska seafood moving to domestic and international markets.
