Alaska An Update on the Yukon River Salmon Crash For the sixth year in a row, there aren’t nearly enough Chinook salmon in the Yukon River. Alaska Public Media by Miranda Weiss - October 2025 In decades past, 300,000 or more Chinook (or kings) headed upriver to spawn, some traveling 2,000 miles into Canada. These fish once filled the smokehouses and freezers of people living along the river. This year, only an estimated 50,000 - 70,000 Chinook returned to the Yukon. And subsistence fishing–the kind that feeds families all winter–was again prohibited. https://alaskapublic.org/programs/trouble-at-sea/yukon-river Alaska Supreme Court upholds dismissal of lawsuit challenging Yukon-Kuskokwim salmon management Alaska Beacon by James Brooks - October 10, 2025 Alaska judges will not hear a lawsuit alleging that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has mishandled the state’s valuable salmon returns. https://alaskabeacon.com/briefs/alaska-supreme-court-upholds-dismissal-of-lawsuit-challenging-yukon-kuskokwim-salmon-management/ International US Senate passes military funding bill with FISH Act attached Seafood Source by Nathan Strout - October 13, 2025 U.S. senators voted to attach legislation designed to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing to the Senate’s annual military spending legislation just before it passed. https://www.seafoodsource.com/news/environment-sustainability/us-senate-passes-military-funding-bill-with-fish-act-attached Labeling and Marketing 3MMI - Global Chum Salmon Supply Tightens as Japan’s Fishery Collapses Tradex Foods - October 13, 2025 Global chum salmon harvests are nearing record lows as Japan’s Hokkaido fishery faces one of its worst seasons, with landings down 60% from last year and 86% below the five-year average.
