Southeast Dungeness crab fishery runs through Nov. 30

Dungeness crab fishing is on for a full fall season that began Oct. 1 and extends through Nov. 30. The commercial Dungeness fishery opened for 55 days this summer, beginning June 15 and closing Aug. 9, six days earlier than usual. Across Southeast, 162 Dungeness fishery permit holders this summer harvested 567,839 crab totaling 1.18 million pounds. Participation and harvest were relatively low, but fishermen earned a good average price of $4.06 per pound, up from an average of $3.13 last season and $2.12 the year before, according to Alaska Department of Fish and Game data.

Alaska Seafood has launched its newest campaign, "Alaska Pink Salmon: Wild Made Easy," to promote pink salmon as a convenient and affordable meal solution.Timed perfectly for the back-to-school season, the campaign highlights the fish’s versatility and nutritional benefits in fresh recipes that inspire lunchbox-friendly meals.The brand package, rolling out through October, includes several assets such as a custom logo featuring "Alaska Pink Salmon: Wild Made Easy," high-quality photos and videos of pink salmon harvesting, processing, species shots, and plated recipes. It also offers consumer-focused content, including make-at-home recipe reels and a shareable recipe collection featuring both canned and filleted easy pink salmon recipes.Additionally, the campaign features a short video about Alaskan pink salmon fisherman Tom Meiners, who, with over 20 seasons of experience, has championed pink salmon as an abundant and wild species."I think I have the best job in the world—going out and catching fish and turning them into a sustainable food product for people to eat all over the country," said Meiners as the video begins. He highlights that pink salmon in Alaska are special due to what he describes as the best habitat available, with cold, clear waters and thousands of streams that converge to bring in fish from the most pristine waters managed by the top fisheries in the world. He adds, "And their abundance makes them affordable."
