As part of these plans, particular attention will be paid to the catch in the Sea of Okhotsk, particularly the North-Okhotsk sea subzone, where all the quotas, allocated for the current year, should be used. By the end of the year total quotas for 115,000 tons should be used. This year, the first part of the pollock/herring fishing season (season "A," from January to April) was held during difficult weather and ice conditions, so the volume of catch was significantly lower than initially expected figures. In this regard, many are pinning their hopes on the second part of the season. According to the Igor Melnikov, deputy director of Pacific Research Fishing Center (TINRO-center), one of Russia’s leading research institutions in the field of fishing, pollock have grown significantly since April. He predicts the majority of catch will account for large-sized fish, which will be beneficial for processors. At the same time in the case of herring, fishermen are currently experiencing a lack of fleet to harvest the quotas. In addition, the purchase price for this fish is at present significantly lower than last year. In this regard, scientists predict no more than 80 percent of the allocated quotas will be used this year.
