There’s no better time to push seafood than during Lent – and the Association of Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP) is certainly taking advantage of the timing. GAPP announced on Wednesday that they are launching their #WAPfor40 challenge, a promotion meant to engage consumers to “try delicious wild Alaska pollock.” According to GAPP, the Wild Alaska Pollock Lent Challenge was created to showcase the prevalence of Wild Alaska Pollock on menus at beloved quick service restaurants, as well as in retail products. The goal is to help consumers “get excited about the fish and its story of superior taste, nutrition and sustainability.” “Wild Alaska Pollock has a great taste, texture and flavor that makes it so popular among quick-service restaurant brands, especially as they add additional menu items for consumers for Lenten season,” explained Craig Morris, CEO of GAPP. “Despite being widely used in some iconic menu items, most consumers don’t know that they’re eating fresh, wild-caught Alaska Pollock or understand its story of being harvested by American fishermen on the waters of the largest sustainable fishery in the world which is off our own coast of Alaska.” GAPP created a Bingo card to showcase wild Alaska pollock on menus and at retail. White Castle’s Fish Slider, McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish, Arby’s Crispy Fish Sandwich and King Hawaiian Fish Sandwich, Bonjangles’ BojAngler, and Burger King’s Big Fish are just a few of the QSR menu items featured on the Bingo card. Meanwhile, Trident’s “The Ultimate Fish Stick,” and Gorton’s Wild Caught Alaska Pollock Beer/ Crispy Battered Fillets are just a few of the retail items featured on the card. “The goal here is to get consumers excited about this amazing fish, and connect them to its incredible story,” added Morris. “We’re always looking to add people to Team Wild Alaska Pollock and we thought this could be a great way to build out our following.
