APL dredging 'disposal events' stir environmental fears Bristol Bay Times by Jim Paulin - November 29, 2019 A fast-moving dredging proposal aims to allow larger container ships in port while creating more land at the American President Lines terminal, with work on the project starting next spring. But residents want to know more about wildlife impacts and offshore "disposal events" involving potentially contaminated soil. http://www.thebristolbaytimes.com/article/1948apl_dredging_disposal_events_stir Low king forecasts again for Stikine and Taku Rivers KFSK by Angela Denning - December 2, 2019 Looking ahead to king salmon fishing next year, it’s expected to be poor on the Stikine and Taku Rivers. That’s according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which released its forecast for the two rivers in Southeast. https://www.kfsk.org/2019/12/02/low-king-forecasts-again-for-stikine-and-taku-rivers/ International One American tech CEO’s tortuous path to surviving Trump’s trade wars Bloomberg by Brian Eckhouse - December 1, 2019 Perhaps no corporate executive in America has been whiplashed more by President Donald Trump’s trade wars than Tom Werner. https://www.seattletimes.com/business/one-american-tech-ceos-tortuous-path-to-surviving-trumps-trade-wars/ Environment/Science New Report Details Actions Needed to Create Climate-Ready Fisheries Report released as discussion draft to spark dialogue and action Environmental Defense Fund - December 2, 2019 (WASHINGTON – Dec. 2, 2019) With climate change increasingly threatening key life support systems of our planet, including the ocean, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) today released a new report identifying key priorities for the world’s fisheries to achieve sustainability in the face of rapidly-warming seas. https://www.edf.org/media/new-report-details-actions-needed-create-climate-ready-fisheries Climate change shifting protected marine ecosystems outside conservation areas Canadian Press by Bob Weber - November 27, 2019 Governments may have to rethink how they conserve ocean ecosystems as climate change forces marine animals from their usual homes, says newly published research. https://www.alaskahighwaynews.ca/climate-change-shifting-protected-marine-ecosystems-outside-conservation-areas-1.24020713 Federal Register Fisheries Off West Coast States; Coastal Pelagic Species Fisheries; Biennial Specifications A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 12/02/2019 Through this final rule, NMFS is implementing allowable catch levels, an overfishing limit, an allowable biological catch, and an annual catch limit for Pacific mackerel in the U.S. exclusive economic zone off the West Coast (California, Oregon and Washington) for the fishing seasons 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, pursuant to the Coastal Pelagic Species Fishery Management Plan. The harvest guideline and annual catch target for the 2019-2020 fishing season are 11,109 metric tons (mt) and 10,109 mt, respectively. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/12/02/2019-25933/fisheries-off-west-coast-states-coastal-pelagic-species-fisheries-biennial-specifications Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska; Pacific Ocean Perch in the Bering Sea Subarea of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 12/02/2019 NMFS is prohibiting directed fishing for Pacific ocean perch in the Bering Sea subarea of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI). This action is necessary to prevent exceeding the 2019 Pacific Ocean perch total allowable catch (TAC) in the Bering Sea subarea of the BSAI. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/12/02/2019-26031/fisheries-of-the-exclusive-economic-zone-off-alaska-pacific-ocean-perch-in-the-bering-sea-subarea-of Magnuson-Stevens Act Provisions; Fisheries Off West Coast States; Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery; Annual Specifications and Management Measures for the 2019 Tribal and Non-Tribal Fisheries for Pacific Whiting, and Requirement To Consider Chinook Salmon Bycatch Before Reapportioning Tribal Whiting; Correction A Rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on 12/02/2019 This action contains a correction to the final rule published on May 10, 2019, to establish the harvest specifications and management measures for the 2019 Pacific whiting fishery under the authority of the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery Management Plan, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and the Pacific Whiting Act of 2006. This action restores language inadvertently omitted from the final rule that explains that NMFS will consider Chinook salmon bycatch and bycatch rates prior to reapportionment of the tribal Pacific whiting allocation. These corrections are necessary to restore this language so that the regulations accurately implement the National Marine Fisheries Service's intent, as described in the preamble to the final rule. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/12/02/2019-25931/magnuson-stevens-act-provisions-fisheries-off-west-coast-states-pacific-coast-groundfish-fishery FYI’s TOAST TO THE COAST - An event to end hunger TICKETS ON SALE NOW!
