So Far ADF&G Sees “Excellent” Pink Salmon Run in Kodiak, AK Peninsula But “Average” in SE Alaska

SeafoodNews.com by Peggy Parker - December 20, 2024

Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game is busy this time of year getting forecasts out for 2025 salmon seasons across the state. They have predicted another big year for sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay — 51.31 million sockeyes, which is nearly 3 million less than the University of Washington-Fisheries Research Institute’s (UW-FRI) forecast of 54.1 million sockeye there, and big runs for pinks in Kodiak and the Alaska Peninsula’s South Region, but only an average run of pinks in Southeast Alaska. Of Alaska’s bigger production areas, the Copper River-Prince William Sound stands out as the last not to have a forecast published yet. The Copper River produces Chinook, sockeye, and coho salmon and Prince William Sound has significant pink and chum salmon fisheries.Kodiak’s pink salmon run was described as “gangbusters,” with a ‘weak’ showing of sockeye expected in 2025.Last Friday ADF&G released their forecast for Chignik’s sockeye run and the Alaska Peninsula’s pink salmon run.  “The 2025 Chignik Management Area predicted sockeye salmon harvest is expected to be in the Weak category with a point estimate of 757,000,” read the agency’s announcement. That total is made up of “684,000 sockeye salmon are estimated to be Chignik bound and 73,000 fish are estimated to be fish harvested while transiting through the Chignik Management Area. The 2025 South Alaska Peninsula area west of Chignik is expected to produce an “excellent” harvest of pink salmon (after June) with an estimated 10.6 million pinks available. The 5-year (odd-year) average harvest of pink salmon in June is 3.1 million fish. The pink salmon harvest in Southeast Alaska (SEAK) in 2025 is predicted to be in the average range, with a point estimate of 29 million fish. That level is slightly above the recent 10-year average harvest of 26 million, but it is approximately 60% of the parent-year (2023) harvest of 48 million.Projected forecasts for Cook Inlet and the Copper River and Prince William Sound regions are expected in the coming months. ADF&G's forecast for 2024 Cook Inlet salmon returns was released in February 2024. For CR-PWS, ADF&G's forecast was released in mid-January 2024, and later runs, for instance the forecast for 2024 Norton Sound salmon, was released in May 2024.
