Alaska The MSC Rejects Request to Drop Certification on SE Alaska Salmon, Stands By its Process SeafoodNews.com by Peggy Parker - July 19, 2024 The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) responded to Ocean Wise’s request two weeks ago that the international sustainability standard drop Southeast Alaska salmon from their approved list with a resounding “No” yesterday.“The MSC calls into question attempts to shortcut the MSC fishery certification process,” the MSC said in its response. “In particular, the recent decision by Ocean Wise, an NGO based in Canada, to reverse its recommendation of Southeast Alaska salmon prior to the completion of the third-party MSC assessment, including the objection process. We are concerned with the filters Ocean Wise applies to select MSC fishery certifications and how, in doing so, the processes that fuel the effectiveness and impact of the MSC program are misrepresented."MSC noted in its statement that their certification program both promotes sustainable fishing practices and catalyzes positive change at scale.“We are proud of the positive ocean impacts that the program has delivered to date, and grateful for the recognition, trust, and engagement built with fishery and industry partners, stakeholders, and consumers around the world,” the statement said.“In the case of the ongoing objection to the fourth recertification of Alaska salmon, we are confident in the rigor and transparency of the third-party assessment process (including the MSC objections procedure). Following this process through to its conclusion will support strengthening and improving fishery performance and uphold the principles for a credible sustainability program,” the statement said.Alaska salmon was the first U.S. fishery to achieve MSC certification and the third globally.“The fishery’s MSC certificate remains valid, and landings can be sold with the MSC blue label. Fishery certificates are good for five years, with the current certificate expiring November 11, 2024,” MSC said in its statement. The recertification assessment is being led by an impartial independent adjudicator.“The MSC stands by the rigor and thoroughness of its assessment process and the outcomes of third-party certification decisions. We are proud of the history of progress that MSC fishery partners have showcased over 25 years of active engagement in the program, and the rigorous and transparent process that makes this change possible.” https://www.seafoodnews.com/Story/1281832/The-MSC-Rejects-Request-to-Drop-Certification-on-SE-Alaska-Salmon-Stands-By-its-Process International 100% Fish movement gathering momentum, with projects underway in Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific "With every new project we develop, we get better knowledge and understanding of what might work elsewhere."
