In fact, fisheries management in Alaska is almost entirely a numbers game in which ordinary peoples’ observations, expectations, and knowledge play no role at all. https://www.kcaw.org/2018/11/09/integrated-research-merges-human-experience-and-fisheries-science/ Alaska Senators Applaud $30 Million Alaska Pollock Procurement Contract for Nutrition Programs SEAFOODNEWS.COM by John Sackton - November 9, 2018 Alaska’s two senators, Sullivan and Murkowski, applauded the USDA’s latest approval of a section 32 purchase of Alaska pollock worth $32 million. The original request, submitted by ASMI, was for a purchase value of $100 million in Alaska pollock, and was justified due to the tariffs imposed on Alaska pollock products by the US and China as part of their trade war. Since then, both Alaska pollock and pollock produced in Russia have been exempted. On the Chinese side, there is no additional tariff on pollock brought in to China for re-export, only on pollock that stays within the country. On the US side, all pollock products, including both Russian and Alaskan, are exempt from the tariffs the US imposed on almost all other seafood items imported from China. “Alaska Pollock is a significant and lucrative market for Alaska and the United States, accounting for one-third of our country’s seafood output. Unfortunately, in light of the retaliatory tariffs imposed by China on Alaska Pollock products, many of those involved in the industry have suffered,” said Senator Murkowski. “I’m encouraged to know that the USDA, under the leadership of Secretary Perdue, has approved this purchase of Alaska Pollock, which will provide a healthy protein source for American households and help safeguard the livelihoods of so many fishermen and coastal communities across our state.” The purchase is from existing authority under USDA programs that buy domestic US agriculture or fisheries products to support USDA funded nutrition programs, known as section 32. https://www.seafoodnews.com/Story/1122979/Alaska-Senators-Applaud-30-Million-Alaska-Pollock-Procurement-Contract-for-Nutrition-Programs International Largest Seafood Companies Assessed Against Sustainable Development Goals Environmental Leader by Alyssa Danigelis - November 6, 2018 The World Benchmarking Alliance plans to assess the 30 largest seafood companies globally against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
