Bristol Bay 2026 Sockeye Harvest Falls Short of Last Year, Ex-Vessel Value Surges on Higher Prices

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game released its 2026 Bristol Bay salmon season summary Tuesday, showing a smaller harvest than last year but a significantly higher fishery value, driven by stronger prices.
In the preliminary summary, ADF&G reported a commercial harvest of 30.1 million sockeye at an average ex-vessel price of $1.72 per pound, for a fishery value of $260.2 million.
That compares with the 2025 season, when fishermen caught 41.2 million sockeye at an ex-vessel price of $1.03 per pound, for a fishery value of $214.3 million.
This year's total inshore run of 45.7 million salmon came in 8% below the 20-year average of 49.6 million fish, but 4% above the preseason forecast of 44.1 million. It was also the first year since 2014 that the total inshore run fell below 50 million fish.
Preliminary harvest estimates for other salmon species were 10,700 Chinook, 457,100 chum, 55,100 coho and 666,700 pink salmon.
The 2026 Bristol Bay preliminary ex-vessel value across all salmon species was $264.0 million, 21% above the 20-year average of $207.8 million.
Average sockeye weight this season was about 5 pounds, in line with the recent five-year average.
Egegik was the most productive fishing district, with a catch of 9.2 million sockeye, narrowly ahead of the Nushagak at 9.1 million.
